Planning a Korea EVO ICL Recovery Program Around Your Flights? Cost, Reviews and Methods
A recovery program for ICL in Korea comes down to a sequence: measurements, surgery, a next-day check, a check at about one week, then follow-up at home. About a week in Seoul is a common starting point for planning.

Told your corneas are too thin for laser, and now wondering whether a Korea EVO ICL recovery program can fit into the leave you have?
Read this before you book the return flight.
You'll know what decides the cost, which review claims hold up, how the methods differ and how to lay out your days, so you can choose a plan that suits your eyes, your leave and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Lee Ki-il, Medical Director and ophthalmologist at OLIM Eye Clinic in Gangnam.
I review your test results and explain them to you in person. Exams, surgery, recovery and care all happen on floors 2–5 of one building, about 200m from Exit 6 of Eonju Station. The lens on our site is ECHO ICL, used for very high myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia.
I wrote this because people tend to fix the flight first and fit the eye checks around it, when the order should run the other way.
My clinic's site doesn't list a product called a recovery program. In practice the phrase means a sequence: measurements, surgery, a next-day check, a check at about one week, then long-term follow-up at home. About a week in Seoul is a common starting point for planning.
Worried the dates won't work? Send your latest prescription and the dates you could travel on WhatsApp, and ask which days your checks would need to fall on.

What does a Korea EVO ICL recovery program include?
Whatever the name on the page, four things matter: the measurements, the surgery, the early checks and the follow-up once you're home. If a clinic sells a named program, ask to see which of those four are written into it.
An ICL sits behind the iris, in front of your own lens, and no corneal tissue is shaved away. A surgeon is mostly watching eye pressure and the gap between the implant and your natural lens. Raised pressure is one of the risks the FDA lists for phakic lenses, and that's why the next-day check deserves a place on your calendar.
A word on the name. EVO is STAAR Surgical's lens line, and the US FDA approved EVO Visian ICL for myopia in 2022. The name on my clinic's site is ECHO ICL. If the brand matters to you, ask any clinic which exact lens model your eye would receive.
Our list of 23 diagnostic, surgical and treatment devices includes the Pentacam, which analyzes corneal shape and thickness, and the TOPCON SP-1P, which photographs the inner corneal cells.
How many days should I plan in Seoul?
Count about a week from surgery as a starting point, plus the days before it for measurements. This is a general planning pattern rather than a fixed schedule at my clinic, so confirm yours before you pay for a flight.
Many people see far better within a day or two, while vision can keep settling for some weeks. Three things commonly add days:
- Contact lenses. Lenses can change corneal shape for a while, so surgeons ask people to stop wearing them before measurements. The FDA gives this advice for LASIK. Ask how long for your lens type, and count those days at home.
- Lens supply. ICLs come in specific powers and sizes, and high powers or astigmatism-correcting lenses may need ordering.
- Second eye. Some surgeons do both eyes on one day, others leave days between them.
One point catches people out. The same-day exam and surgery on my clinic's site is written for 5th-generation SMILE. Don't carry that over to ICL when you plan.
As for the flight, ICL surgery leaves no gas bubble in the eye, so cabin pressure usually isn't the concern. What counts is having your early checks done before you leave. Cabin air is dry, so keep your drops in your hand luggage.
Wednesday and Sunday change your surgery date
OLIM is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. A Tuesday or Saturday operation puts the next morning on a closed day, so ask how a next-day check would work before you settle on either.
The other hours matter too. We open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 10:00–19:00, Friday 10:00–19:30 and Saturday 09:00–15:00, with lunch 13:00–14:00. Registration for exams and surgery closes two hours before closing, so an exam on Saturday means registering by 13:00.
A ten-day example to test your own calendar
Say you're around minus 10 with astigmatism, a surgeon at home said your corneas are too thin for laser, and you have ten days off. Here's how I'd reason through the dates.
You land on a Friday evening and register for measurements on Saturday morning. Skip swimming and eye rubbing in between, as most surgeons advise.
Now test the weak points. If the lens has to be ordered, Monday moves. If the space inside your eye is too narrow for an implant, the trip ends without surgery, and you go home with a full set of measurements. A changeable return ticket costs you little in either case. Check all of this against what your surgeon actually wants before you commit.
Who looks after my eye once I'm home?
Sort that out before you leave home. The CDC's medical tourism guidance advises arranging follow-up care with a local provider before you travel and carrying copies of your medical records.
In practice, find an ophthalmologist near you and ask whether they'd see someone with an ICL placed abroad. Before you leave Seoul, ask for a copy of your records: lens model, power and size, surgery dates, pressure readings and your drop schedule. Your local doctor can't work from "a lens in Korea".
Long term, an ICL patient generally needs regular eye exams that track eye pressure, inner corneal cells and early cataract. Those are checks you'll have at home for years, so choose that doctor with some care.
Risks and side effects to know
In the first days and weeks, many people notice blur, redness, dryness, light sensitivity, and glare or halos at night. These usually ease over days to weeks, though recovery varies and night symptoms can last longer for some.
Less often, the FDA's list of phakic lens risks includes raised eye pressure, loss of inner corneal cells, cataract, retinal detachment, infection and a need for further surgery. An implant can be taken out, but removal doesn't undo every effect it may have had.
As general medicine, you should usually wait or skip ICL with an unstable prescription, active eye inflammation, poorly controlled glaucoma, a shallow space at the front of the eye, a low inner corneal cell count, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
If you get eye pain, a sudden drop in vision, marked redness, or halos with headache or nausea after flying home, see an ophthalmologist or emergency eye service that same day and take your records with you.
If you were turned down at home, add that report on WhatsApp with the reason in one line, and ask whether a lens for your numbers would need ordering.
Your numbers decide itSend a photo of your prescription or eye exam report. The doctor reviews it.
What decides the cost of ICL in Korea?
No single figure fits everyone, because several things move it:
- The lens: model, power and whether it also corrects astigmatism
- One eye or both, and whether they're done on the same day
- Measurements done before surgery
- Days in Seoul: your stay grows with lens ordering and check visits
- Follow-up, both in Seoul and with your doctor at home
Ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case, with a photo of your prescription, and ask which of those items the figure covers.
What do reviews get right about ICL recovery?
They're useful on what it feels like and weak on what was measured. Here are the claims you'll see most often, in general terms:
- Clear vision by the next morning. This is common. It tells you nothing about eye pressure or lens position, which is why the check still matters.
- Halos at night. This is true for some people. They often fade, but not always, so take it seriously if you drive at night for work.
- Flying home after two or three days. Some people do. A review rarely says what their surgeon checked first, so it can't stand in for your own plan.
- Everything was included. A review can't tell you what your own quote covers. Ask for the list.
Methods compared: ICL, SMILE, LASIK and LASEK
The method changes the trip, so compare them before you pick dates. Here's what my clinic's site says about each:
| Method | How it corrects | Timing detail |
|---|---|---|
| 5th-gen SMILE (SCHWIND ATOS) | Laser through a 2mm incision, no flap | Exam to surgery in one day |
| LASIK | Laser, with a corneal flap | Recovery 1–2 days |
| LASEK (Contoura on Wavelight ex500) | Ablation follows your corneal shape | Recovery 2–4 days |
| ICL (ECHO ICL) | Lens behind the iris, cornea not shaved | Ask for your visit plan |
Thin corneas are among the reasons the FDA says LASIK may not suit someone, which is why ICL enters the conversation. Surface laser may still be an option for some thin corneas, though healing is slower and haze is a possible risk. My post on choosing between SMILE, LASIK and LASEK in Korea goes further into the cornea side, and the full treatment list is on OLIM Eye Clinic's English site.
What to send before you choose dates
A first message doesn't need to be long. One photo of your latest prescription is enough on WhatsApp, and you can ask before booking anything. Add one question: which day would my surgery have to fall on for the checks to work with my return flight?
When you come, I'll go through your test results with you in person and recommend what fits your eyes, and we'll choose together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly home the day after ICL surgery?
Most surgeons want the early checks done first, and those usually include a look at about one week. The flight itself is rarely the problem, because there's no gas bubble in the eye. Ask your surgeon for the earliest date that suits your eye.
Can both eyes be done on the same trip?
Often, yes. Some surgeons treat both eyes on one day and others leave days between them, and the second approach lengthens your stay. Ask about this before you set your return date.
Can an ICL be removed if I don't like the result?
An ICL can be taken out in a further operation, which is one reason people consider it. That is still surgery with its own risks, and it may not reverse changes such as cataract.
When can I go back to screen work?
Many people manage screens within a few days, though dryness and tired eyes are common early on. Use your drops as directed and take breaks. If your job involves night driving or dusty sites, ask your surgeon about it specifically.
Does one-day surgery apply to ICL at OLIM?
The one-day description on our site is written for 5th-generation SMILE. For ICL, plan on separate days until you've confirmed your own schedule, since lens supply and test results can both affect the timing.
