DRY EYE CARE

When artificial tears
aren't enough

When tears are too few or evaporate too quickly, the eye's surface is damaged. Treatment depends on the cause.

WHY OLIM DRY EYE

If you’re only using artificial tears,
take another look at the cause

Most dry eye is the type where tears evaporate quickly, and a leading cause is meibomian gland dysfunction. Different causes call for different treatments.

POINT 01

We measure
your tears

The OCULUS Keratograph 5M images the meibomian glands and measures tear meniscus height, tear film breakup time, the lipid layer and redness.

POINT 02

For blocked oil glands,
heat and pressure

LipiFlow applies heat to the inner eyelid and intermittent pressure to the outer eyelid, melting hardened secretions in the meibomian glands and helping them drain.

For inflammation,
pulsed light

IPL AQUA CEL applies pulsed light around the cheekbones and temples to calm vascular inflammation and activate meibomian gland function.

CAUSE

What causes dry eye?

Too few tears, too much evaporation or an imbalance in tear composition damages the eye's surface, causing stinging, irritation and a gritty feeling.

MEIBOMIAN GLAND

Most dry eye is an oil gland problem

Dry eye is divided into a type with too few tears and a type where tears evaporate too quickly, and most cases are the latter. The 20–25 meibomian glands along the eyelid margin release oil that keeps tears from evaporating; when these glands are blocked, meibomian gland dysfunction results.

TREATMENT

Five treatments chosen by cause

PUNCTAL PLUG

Before punctal plugs

Much dry eye is caused by inflammation, so it is better to treat the inflammation first and improve tear quality before the procedure. Brief pain or bleeding may occur for 3–6 days afterward.

EQUIPMENT

Dry eye treatment equipment

IPL AQUA CEL
Treatment · Dry eye & eye areaIPL AQUA CEL

Uses wavelength filters to treat vascular inflammation and helps release hardened oil at the meibomian gland openings, treating a cause of dry eye.

LipiFlow
Treatment · Meibomian glandLipiFlow

A dedicated device that applies heat and pressure to the eyelids to melt hardened secretions in the meibomian glands and help restore their function.

OCULUS Keratograph 5M

Images the meibomian glands and measures tear meniscus height, tear break-up time, lipid layer and redness.

SYMPTOM

Watery eyes despite dryness?
That’s a dry eye sign too

When the eye surface dries out, the irritation can trigger a reflex flood of tears. Having lots of tears doesn’t mean you don’t have dry eye.

EXAM

We check the type before treatment

Dry eye comes in two types—too few tears, or tears that evaporate too fast—and treatment depends on the cause. So we look at several factors together.

  1. Consultation

We ask when and how often symptoms occur, and about your screen and contact lens habits.

  2. Tear volume · stability

We measure how many tears you produce and how quickly they dry after you open your eyes.

  3. Meibomian glands · eyelids

We check whether the oil glands are blocked and whether the lid margins are inflamed.

  4. Treatment plan

Based on the results, we choose what you need from warm compresses and gland expression, IPL, LipiFlow, and punctal occlusion.

We don't recommend punctal occlusion as a first treatment. We treat inflammation first to improve tear quality, then perform it.

FAQ

FAQ

For anything else, ask us on WhatsApp.

Will artificial tears alone fix it?

They help with mild dry eye, but care depends on the cause. If your eyes dry out again soon after artificial tears, it's worth checking your tear film and meibomian glands.

Can young people get dry eye?

Yes. Looking at screens for long periods reduces blinking, so tears evaporate faster. Contact lenses and dry indoor air also play a role, so it can happen at any age.

My eyes water a lot—can it still be dry eye?

It can. When the eye surface dries out, the irritation can trigger reflex tearing.

Does the punctal plug stay in the eye for good?

Dissolvable plugs dissolve after about 4 months. If they helped, the procedure can be repeated.

Is LipiFlow done one eye at a time?

It treats the upper and lower lids at the same time, both eyes together, for 12 minutes.

What happens if dry eye is left untreated?

It can make reading, driving and work increasingly uncomfortable, and severe dry eye left for a long time can damage the cornea. If symptoms keep coming back, get checked.
